The University of Miami released its latest depth chart on Monday ahead of the upcoming road game against Virginia Tech. There are some interesting nuggets worth mentioning at the safety spots, linebackers corps and along the defensive and offensive lines.
JoJo Nicolas‘ is still listed as the starting strong safety despite the return of Ray Ray Armstrong from suspension. Armstrong and Vaughn Telemaque have an OR between their names at the free safety spot. Presumably, Nicolas will stay at the safety position for at least another game before moving back to cornerback. Keep in mind that Nicolas was a safety before he moved to corner.
In the injured Ramon Buchanan‘s place at weakside linebacker are Jordan Futch OR Kelvin Cain. Buchanan will miss the season after sustaining an injury against Bethune-Cookman, and his presence will be missed as Miami looks to shore up its 105th-ranked rushing defense.
True freshman defensive end Anthony Chickillo remains the starter on the right side with Marcus Robinson OR Andrew Smith on the left. On the interior there’s an OR between Marcus Forston and Adewale Ojomo, who was moved to the interior before last Saturday’s game. As I’ve made clear in articles published yesterday and last week, the Miami rush defense is off to its worst start since 1995. Head coach Al Golden noted that stopping the run was a primary concern for the ‘Canes, according to the Palm Beach Post.
The offensive tackle positions are interesting, too. Brandon Washington OR Malcolm Bunche are listed on the left side with Jon Feliciano OR Seantrel Henderson listed on the right. The interior of the line remains unchanged. Whoever ends up starting, expect a good mix up front. One of the keys to victory against the Hokies is winning the ground game. The offensive line has thus far played well in making room for running back Lamar Miller.
