We’re about two days late on this, but College Baseball Newspaper released its Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American Team, and two Hurricanes were on the list.
Catcher Peter O’Brien was named to the second team, while right-handed pitcher Eric Whaley was named to the third-team. O’Brien is a transfer from Bethune-Cookman, who enters his first season at UM following a successful stint with the Wildcats. Whaley was 7-5 as a starter last season with a 2.05 ERA.
O’Brien is on the second team behind first-team catcher Mike Zunino of Florida. Zunino was projected by CBN as the national player of the year. Florida, who was ranked first in the country by CBN in the preseason poll, has seven players on the All-America list. Florida State, ranked 13th in the preseason poll, has two.
CBN named Miami 14th in its preseason rankings, the 17th year in a row the Hurricanes have made the list dating back to the 1994 season.
The Hurricanes open the season in a three-game series against Rutgers in Coral Gables beginning February 17.
