It has been a good run (no pun intended) for former Miami Hurricane RB Clinton Portis.
On Thursday, the Washington Redskins will formally hold a press conference in which Portis is expected to hang up his helmet.
Some quick notes:
- Portis was drafted in the second round by the Denver Broncos in 2002. He has been with the ‘Skins for the last seven years and has rushed for 6,824 yards, 649 yards short of surpassing franchise holder John Riggins.
- Portis ranks as the 27th all-time rusher, running just shy of 10,000 yards.
- Portis has been voted to the Pro Bowl twice.
- Portis last played in 2010.
Was Portis’ career good enough to receive recognition from the Hall of Fame? That may be up for debate, but there is no doubt that his career was one to admire.
Portis may be just as well known as his off the field antics such as dressing up in costumes and acting out his various persona’s during interviews.
In any event, there is no doubt that in his prime, Portis was a force to be reckoned with. He wasn’t the biggest guy on the field, but his physical size was overshadowed by his desire to compete. He wasn’t afriad to put his body on the line and would play injured if that is what it took to get the win.
Congratulations on a wonderful career, Clinton.
