At least that is what the Miami Herald is speculating. If this is to be so, what an upgrade for FIU.
Just earlier this month, Butch Davis admitted no interest in the Panthers opening. However, Davis may have had a change of heart.
…Butch Davis will be the next FIU coach, it’ll be announced next week and Davis has been smoothing things over with former FIU head coach Mario Cristobal, once an assistant under Davis at the University of Miami.”
It appears as if the Panthers like them some Miami coaches.
Before leaving Miami for the Browns, Davis began his tenure in Coral Gables in 1995. Shortly after his hire, Miami found themselves in trouble with the NCAA do to former ‘Canes coach, Dennis Erickson. Davis amassed an impressive 51-20 record while at the ‘U’ and finished 11-1 during his last season (2000). Miami’s 2001 team, considered by many to be the greatest college football team assembled of all time, won a championship under Larry Coker. Had Davis stayed at Miami, he would have certainly won a National Championship.
Following his stint in Cleveland, Davis headed to the University of North Carolina in 2006. Davis again found himself in trouble with the NCAA again, this time for players allegedly receiving impermissible benefits. He was fired from UNC in 2010 and did not coach in 2011.
