The Miami Hurricanes received a big defensive commitment on Wednesday when Champagnat Catholic (Hialeah, FL.) DT Travonte Valentine committed to The U.
As of late, the Hurricanes have struggled to land defensive tackles. Valentine had become a top priority for Golden and staff, one that they couldn’t afford to miss out on.
With over 30 offers, the 6-4, 297-pound tackle chose the Hurricanes over Alabama, Florida State, Georgia and LSU, among others.
Valentine is a consensus 4-star prospect who is ranked the No. 8 DT and the No. 12 prospect on the state of Florida, per the 247Composite.
A one-time Florida Gator commit, Valentine pledged to UF in July 2012, only to de-commit in February.
He becomes Miami’s 20th commitment in the 2014 class and the second defensive tackle, joining Dalvon Stuckey (Pearl River C.C.).
The Hurricanes’ defense was stagnant in 2012 – mostly on the line – ranking 118th overall, including 99th in passing (268.5) and 104th in rushing (217.9).
