CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s basketball team will host seven home games and travel to Gainesville, Barclays Center and the Gildan Charleston Classic during its 2014-15 non-conference slate, Coach Jim Larrañaga announced Thursday. “This is a great non-conference schedule for our players and our fans,” said Larrañaga. “Playing Florida, Illinois, Providence and competing in the ESPN Charleston Classic will give us great competition to gauge our progress and prepare us for our ACC schedule.” UM opens the season with an exhibition against Eckerd College on Nov. 6, followed by the regular-season lidlifter on Nov. 14 against Howard. After games at 2014 Final Four participant Florida and at the Charleston Classic, the Canes return to the BUC for six of the final seven home games. UM will face preseason Top 10 ranked Florida for the first time since 2009, in a Nov. 17 matchup in Gainesville, then the Canes will host the Gators in the fall of 2015. After the in-state matchup, Miami plays in the Charleston Classic Nov. 20-23, which includes Akron, Charlotte, Cornell, Drexel, Penn State, South Carolina and Southern California. The Canes will then face Charlotte on Nov. 25, also part of the Charleston Classic. After five-straight home tilts from Nov. 28 to Dec. 19, Miami hits the road for Brooklyn to face Coach L’s alma mater and 2014 Big East Champion, Providence College, in a Dec. 22 matchup at the Barclays Center. Miami’s home non-conference schedule is highlighted by the Dec. 2 ACC/BigTen Challenge game against Illinois. The Hurricanes last defeated the Fighting Illini in 2013, on their way to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Canes will also face a pair of conference champions in Horizon League regular season champs Wisconsin-Green Bay (Dec. 6) and Ohio Valley champs Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 19), as well as South Alabama (Nov. 28) and Savannah State (Dec. 8) at the BankUnited Center. UM wraps up non-conference play in Coral Gables on Dec. 30 against College of Charleston. The Canes welcome nine newcomers to the 2014-15 roster, which includes six recruits – Kamari Murphy, Ja’Quan Newton, James Palmer, Omar Sherman, Joe Thomas and Ivan Cruz Uceda – along with two Big 12 transfers – Angel Rodriguez and Sheldon McClellan – and redshirt freshman Deandre Burnett, who sat out the 2013-14 season with an injury.
