It came at least a year earlier than many thought it would, but the Brad Kaaya era is officially upon us in Coral Gables, Al Golden announced after practice today. While he didn’t confirm anything beyond Kaaya starting against the Cardinals a week from tomorrow, it’s fair to assume he’s the guy going forward in Coral Gables.
Kaaya impressed the coaches and his teammates alike with his mature play throughout fall camp and earned the start after a battle with Jake Heaps. What can we expect from Brad this year? A lot of ups and downs. As we saw from some mouth-watering GIFs, he has the arm to make gorgeous throws. However, the track record for true freshman starting at quarterback is not good in college football and there will be low points.
That said, now that the decision has been made I firmly believe the ‘Canes need to stick with Kaaya no matter what comes their way this year. I feel truly bad for Ryan Williams because this was his year, but it’s not worth burning Kaaya’s redshirt for him to play four or five games a la Stephen Morris when he was a freshman. (Side note: will Randy Shannon‘s mismanagement ever stop haunting this program?)
I guess this is the part where I have to make some sort of obligatory prediction for how he does this year. The talent around him is so good that he should be fine, let’s say somewhere in the neighborhood of 2500 yards with 18-20 TDs and 12-14 INTs.
Kaaya will be thrown right into the fire in a nationally televised night game in a tough atmosphere. We’ll have a ton of Louisville preview coverage over the course of the week here on Canes Warning. For now, Miami finally has named a starting quarterback and it’s Trinidad Brad Kaaya.
