History Lesson: Miami Hurricanes vs. Virginia Tech Hokies

facebooktwitterreddit

The Miami Hurricanes are coming off a bye week at the record (4-3, 1-2) and traveling to Blacksburg, Virginia to take on their rival, the Virginia Tech Hokies (4-3,1-2) with their thunderous crowd in Lane Stadium on a Thursday Night. Virginia Tech is coming off a disappointing loss against Pittsburgh 21-16, and they look to bounce back at home against the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes still have aspirations of winning the Coastal Division, especially after the losses of divisional foes and leaders Virginia and Georgia Tech this past weekend.

The ACC scenario is a mess all in it’s own so we’re just going to take a look at the history between the Miami Hurricanes and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Miami leads the rivalry 18-13 all-time against the Hokies. They have played each other every year since 1992, and in 1995, Virginia Tech became members of the Big East Conference along with Miami. In 2004, Miami and Virginia Tech both joined the Atlantic Coast Conference. Miami has only won at Blacksburg once in the past ten years since joining the ACC and current coach Al Golden is 1-3 against the Hokies, while Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer is 12-10 all- time against the Hurricanes.

Top 3 Memorable Moments:

2000, The #2 Virginia Tech Hookies (8-0) travel to the famous Orange Bowl to take on the Miami Hurricanes ranked #3 (6-1). The Big East Title on the line, and with the National Championship in sight, both teams were looking to get an important win. Although star quarterback Michael Vick didn’t start that game due to injury, he would later come into the game. The Canes Defense capitalized on a banged up Vick, and made back-up QB Dave Meyer’s life miserable. Ken Dorsey, Jeremy Shockey, and Santana Moss had a field day with Virginia Tech’s secondary.

2005: A Road Victory

This game is the only Canes victory at Blacksburg in the last 10 years. Virginia Tech was ranked at #5, and Miami was ranked at #3. Both teams once again were battling for a divisional title. Virginia Tech was led by the brother of Michael Vick, Marcus Vick at QB, and Miami was led by an aggressive defense (4-3) playing man to man coverage with players such as Jon Beason, Brandon Meriweather, DJ Williams, Kelly Jennings, Kenny Phillips, and Rocky McIntosh. Kyle Wright had an decent game with the help of the running backs Tyrone Moss and Charlie Jones.  Hopefully, the Canes can remodel this impressive victory at Lane Stadium of 35-7  this upcoming Thursday Night, because coaches, players. and fans all need it.

2011, A hope?

This game happened during Al Golden’s first year as Miami’s head coach. In this fall afternoon, the Canes fought hard and showed toughness on the road against the Hokies. Down at halftime 21 to 7, Miami fought back. The Canes had an impressive showing offensively with Jacory Harris, who was developing nicely under former offensive coordinator Jed Fisch (or at least he looked good at the time.) Lamar Miller also helped out by pounding the Virginia Tech defense on the ground. Despite that, however, Virginia Tech was led by Logan Thomas who scored the game winning touchdown with a little under two minutes to go, and the Miami defense had a tough day against the Hokies, giving up 400 + yards of offense, which we are used to seeing now. Despite the loss, at the time, this game gave Miami fans some hope, because the team showed heart and passion and lost a close one to a good football team. Take a look at the episode of Raising Canes from Canes All Access,

The ‘Canes and Virginia Tech have a long history between each other, and there will be no love lost between these two teams. Virginia Tech got the best out of Miami in that rainy game last season in Miami, but will the Canes come out to play on Thursday Night after a bye week? We’ll find out this Thursday at 8:00 PM EST on ESPN.
