The Wide Rights

It is safe to say that most Canes fans like to use the expression ” Wide Right” when talking to Florida State fans because many of these games have come to last-minute field goals in huge games. The rivalry is best known for these moments that came down to a field goal in the last seconds with national title aspirations on the line for both teams., lets take the History of the Wide Rights

1991 – Wide Right I

#2 Miami Hurricanes vs. #1 Florida State Seminoles battled in Doak Campbell Stadium with National Title aspirations on the line on November 17, 1991. This game was an opportunity to win the first national championship in program history for Florida State. With 29 seconds left in the game and the Canes against the wall, Florida State kicker Garry Thomas missed a field goal resulting in a victory for the Hurricanes 17-16, and their 4th national title.

Wide Right II

The match up once again had National Title implications on the line; the Hurricanes were ranked #2 and the Seminoles were ranked #3 on October 3, 1992.  The Seminoles were led by Heisman Trophy candidate Charlie Ward while the Canes were led by Gino Torretta, both quarterbacks. Ward drove the Seminoles down the field, and they called upon their kicker Dan Mowrey to tie the game at 19.

Wide Right III

On October 7, 2000, just like past years, national title hopes were on the line. Miami was led by quarterback Ken Dorsey and FSU was led by Heisman Trophy Winner Chris Weinke. With the game on the line, a FSU kicker was called to win the game. (Again?) Matt Munyon missed the kick wide right and sealed the victory for the Hurricanes. However, the outcome of the game sparked controversy, as the Seminoles were ranked ahead of Miami at the end of the season in the BCS poll, while Miami was ahead in the AP and coaches poll. This year could have very well been another national title for the Miami Hurricanes.

Wide Right IV

Yes! There is a FOURTH Wide Right!! The game took place in January 1, 2004 in the Orange Bowl. There was not a National Title on the line like in past history. However, FSU Xavier Beitia Kicker missed a field goal with 5 minutes to go that would have given the Seminoles the lead. This was the second victory for the Miami Hurricanes against the Florida State Seminoles in 2003-2004 season.

Prime time

The last time the Hurricanes defeated the Seminoles was in early September on Labor Day Night in 2009, and in a game Bobby Bowden called one of the best games between the two schools ever. The Canes were led by Jacory Harris and Graig Cooper in a massive offensive game, which I’m sure many Canes fans would like to see yet again this weekend. Can the Hurricanes rekindle the swagger and climb the mountain? Defeat the undefeated Seminoles? Tune in on ABC 8 ET on Saturday Night.
