In a pair of Miami Herald columns, Barry Jackson quoted interviews with the parents of current Miami quarterbacks N’Kosi Perry and Jarren Williams that they plan on stating with the Miami football team despite the recent edition of Ohio State Transfer Tate Martell.

Incumbent starting quarterback, Rising Redshirt Sophomore N’Kosi Perry and rising Redshirt Freshman Jarren Williams will not shy away from the competition that Tate Martell will bring to the Miami football team. The Hurricanes might also add a quarterback to their Surge ’19 recruiting class.

Perry started six of Miami’s 13 games in 2018. Malik Rosier who has graduated started the other seven games. Perry did lead the Hurricanes in almost every passing category in 2018. He had the most attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns for the Hurricanes and their highest passing efficiency.

Willams and Cade Weldon each attempted three passes last season. The only playing time they received was in Miami’s 77-0 victory over Savannah State who is moving down to Division II from FCS for the 2019 season.

Perry’s stats were very underwhelming amid high expectations from a large segment of the Miami fanbase. Perry completed 50.8 percent of his passes for 1,091 yards, a pitiful 5.7 yards per attempt, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Perry is the only quarterback on the Miami roster that has thrown a pass against FBS team guaranteed to be eligible in 2019. Martell’s eligibility is in doubt for 2019. Most players have to sit out a season before gaining eligibility following a transfer. The exceptions are Graduate Transfers and getting a waiver from the NCAA.

The Columbus Dispatch Reported last week after Martell entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal that he was on pace to graduate in May. If Martell does not graduate then he has the option of petitioning the NCAA for the waiver to avoid having to sit out next season.

Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports wrote that Martell is going to use Ohio State’s coaching change as the reason he transferred. It seems like a longshot. Martell transferred due to the Buckeyes getting former Georgia Quarterback Justin Fields. Fields left Athens because he was behind Jake Fromm at quarterback.

Fields is also going to seek a waiver to play immediately. Welcome to the new world order of college football. Much like society, the players in the modern era expect immediate gratification and playing time. The four and five star players are not as likely to wait their turn to play as past generations did.

"Jackson quoted Williams father in the Herald on Wednesday. “He’s fine…He’s committed to being there. It has never been an issue with competition with Jarren. The cream always rises to the top.”"

Perry’s mother Roberta spoke to CaneSport and Jackson quoted the conversation in his column in the Herald on Thursday morning.

"“(N’Kosi) is staying at Miami. He said it’s a wide open competition, that everything starts new. It’s a new coach so everything starts new. He’s very excited about it….N’Kosi is looking forward to what [Enos] can bring to the quarterbacks. It also was so nice of Manny Diaz to give N’Kosi a call when everything was happening after he took over. Manny did call and talk to him, and we appreciated that.”"

It has only been three weeks since the Miami football team lost to Wisconsin in the Pinstripe Bowl. The Hurricanes offseason has been one of the most eventful in the program’s history if not the history of college football. There are still 226 days until Miami plays Florida in Orlando. That’s only eight percent of the offseason elapsed.

Next. Tate Martell instantly upgrades Miami football roster. dark

There are three more weeks until National Signing Day and about seven weeks until Spring football practice starts. Expect Manny Diaz’s first offseason to continue to produce news almost every day.
