Jerome Brown was a fixture in the middle of the defensive line for the Miami football team in the mid-1980s. Brown set the standard for future Hurricanes greats like Russell Maryland and Cortez Kennedy.

Jerome Brown was a dominant force in the middle of the defensive line on the Miami football team in the mid-1980s. Brown set the standard for future greats on the interior of the Hurricanes defensive lines and those that followed him. Brown is the best player in Miami Hurricanes history to wear number 98.

Brown came to Miami after playing for Hernando High School in Brooksville, Florida. Brown started in the 1984 Orange Bowl as a true freshman. A game that Miami upset heavily favored Nebraska to win the Hurricanes’ first National Championship. Brown started in four New Year’s Day Bowl games during his career.

Brown finished his storied Miami career in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl loss to Penn State. During his four seasons with Miami, Brown accumulated 183 tackles, 21 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. Brown ranks 10th all-time in sacks in Hurricanes history.

Following his legendary Miami career,

Brown

was the ninth pick in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Brown became a two-time All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection in 1990 and 1991. Brown started 65 of the 76 games he played during his five-year NFL career from 1987-91.

Brown was part of an Eagles defense that included Pro Football Hall of Famer Reggie White. The Eagles finished in the top 11 in defense his last four years in the NFL. Brown finished his NFL career with 29.5 sacks, 10 fumbles recoveries and three interceptions. Brown had one sack in three career playoff games.

Brown was on his way to a Hall of Fame career when he tragically died in a car accident on June 25, 1992. Driving at a high rate of speed Brown crashed ZR1 Chevrolet Corvette into a palm tree. Brown and his 12-year old nephew who was in the car with him were killed instantly. Brown’s legacy with Miami will live forever.
