In an analysis of the 64 Power Five schools’ non-conference schedules, the Miami football team’s four games against Temple, Wagner, UAB and at Michigan State, ranked 40th.

The Miami football team will kick off their 2020 season hosting Temple September 5. The Hurricanes host FCS Wagner and Alabama-Birmingham the following two weeks before concluding their non-conference schedule against Michigan State in East Lansing September 26.

The season opener against Temple is a departure for Miami from the last two seasons. Miami played LSU at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas to begin the 2018 season and against Florida at Camping World Stadium in Orlando in 2019. Both of those games resulted in losses to open their season.

Hosting Temple, Wagner and UAB to start the 2020 season should provide Miami with a much better chance at beginning the 2020 season 3-0. Michigan State has its own issues with new head coach Mel Tucker. Longtime Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio resigned less than 24 hours before National Signing Day in February.

Tucker was hired after Michigan State players had already signed. The Spartans finished with the nation’s 44th ranked recruiting class of Dantonio signed players. Tucker left Colorado after one season for a much more lucrative contract with Michigan State. Michigan State is 10th in the non-conference schedule rankings.

"10. Michigan State: at Brigham Young, Toledo, Miami. Great schedule. A name-brand in the Hurricanes, the most tradition-rich mid-major in BYU and a solid Mid-American program in Toledo.40. Miami: Temple, Wagner, Alabama-Birmingham, at Michigan State. Interesting. No Florida teams among Miami’s nonconference foes."

The above analysis came from Berry Tramel of the Oklahoman newspaper. The rankings by Tramel are purely subjective. Tramel did not mention what went into the rankings other than the statement “Ranking the nonconference schedules of the 64 teams in the Power 5 conferences.”

Wagner brings the Miami football schedule down the most. Playing an FCS school does not help the strength of schedule. Wagner finished 1-11 in 2019, further bringing the Miami strength of schedule down. UAB was 9-5 in 2019 with a New Orleans Bowl appearance, Temple was 8-5 and Michigan State 7-6.
