Miami Hurricanes Football Preview: Wide Receivers
By Juan Toribio
When you have a quarterback as good as Brad Kaaya, it makes playing wide receiver even more fun than what it already is. It also helps a quarterback a whole lot when the group is good, and that’s exactly what Kaaya will be dealing with this season.
The Hurricanes lost Phillip Dorsett to the NFL but return pretty much everyone else. This is all while getting Rashawn Scott back and adding Lawrence Cager in recruiting. The Miami Hurricanes have a really talented cast of wide receivers but the key in camp will be to find the clear number one out of this group.
Let’s meet the wide receivers that Kaaya will be throwing to this season.
Stacy Coley – Junior – 6’1 187 lbs
Stacy Coley was one of the best freshman in the country in 2013. Coley did it both on special teams and catching the ball from then quarterback Stephen Morris. In 2014, the expectations for Coley were sky high and unfortunately, he suffered from a bad case of the sophomore slump.
Coley had just 23 receptions for 184 yards last season, this coming after putting up 591 yards on 33 catches in 2013. Coley didn’t score a touchdown in 2014, catching 7 of them as a freshman.
Coley, however, has a ton of talent and I can’t imagine him struggling for most of this season also. He dealt with some shoulder pain last season and if healthy, he can give this offense a whole of a lot more than he did last season.
Herb Waters – Senior – 6’2 195 lbs
Herb Waters happens to be a fan favorite and the coaches take a lot of heat from the fans for not giving him enough playing time and understandably so. It seems that Waters always makes a nice play for the Canes when given the opportunity. Waters isn’t the biggest or fastest receiver but he knows how to play the position.
Coming into his senior season Waters will get an opportunity to compete for a rotation role and show the coaches why fans usually call for more playing time.
Braxton Berrios – Sophomore – 5’9 183 lbs
Braxton Berrios is best friends with Brad Kaaya and he also showed that he’s a really good slot receiver as a freshman. Kaaya and Berrios connected on three touchdowns passes last season, although it could’ve been four (FSU game). But anyway, Berrios had his first full offseason this year since he couldn’t really do much last offseason due to a torn ACL.
Berrios will get even more reps this season and his relationship with Kaaya, combined with his ability to run routes should catapult him to a good sophomore season.
Malcolm Lewis – Redshirt Junior – 6’0 189 lbs
Malcolm Lewis is another guy that brings up a hot topic amongst fans. Lewis, who suffered that gruesome ankle injury, had a nice season for Miami in 2014. Lewis recorded 25 catches for 248 yards and appeared in all 13 games. Lewis will compete with Berrios throughout camp to see who starts out as the starting slot receiver for Miami.
Lewis is a terrific slot receiver and still has a ton of quickness despite that nasty injury. With another year to build strength and confidence, Lewis could have a productive season.
Rashawn Scott – Redshirt Senior – 6’2 205 lbs
Rashawn Scott is the pick by a lot of people to emerge as the dominant receiver for Miami. After sitting out all last year with an injury, Scott is back for his senior season and all signs point towards him providing the same — or more — of the production he did as a sophomore. The redshirt senior recorded 512 yards on just 35 receptions in 2012-2013 while also catching three touchdown passes.
Scott and Kaaya have reportedly built a good connection during the spring and Miami hopes that Scott can be himself again after an injury-riddled couple of years.
D’Mauri Jones – Redshirt Junior – 6’4 196 lbs
D’Mauri Jones won’t get much playing time because of the talent level in front of him but he’ll provide another solid special teams body. Jones recorded his first catch against FAMU last season.
Lawrence Cager – Freshman – 6’5 200 lbs
Lawrence Cager is the only wide receiver that the Canes were able to land in the 2014 class, but he’s a good one. The four-star out of high school chose Miami over a late push by Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide. Cager has excellent size at 6’5 but will probably need to put on a couple more pounds before he really becomes a consistent threat.
Cager is one of those fringe players heading into camp. He could find some playing time in the rotation with a stellar camp, but he could also find himself redshirted. My bet is that he gets some burn this season.
Darrell Langham – Redshirt Freshman – 6’4 212 lbs
Darrell Langham is another one of those tall receivers that offensive coordinator James Coley loves to have on his team. Langham, from Santaluces, has good ball skills and could get some looks in the red zone this season.
It’ll be interesting to see how Langham has improved after redshirting last season.
Tyre Brady – Sophomore – 6’3 204 lbs
Tyre Brady is a talented wide receiver from South Dade high school in Miami. Brady saw some action against FAMU and that was the reason why he didn’t get the redshirt last year. Brady has a lot of talent but he needed to put on some weight and he’s done just that as he’s being listed at 204 pounds coming into camp.
Brady, like all the other receivers, will get a look during camp and he could be one of those guys that’s steps up and has a successful sophomore season.
