Miami Hurricanes Football: CanesCamp Day One Notes
By Juan Toribio
Football is finally back on Thursday as the Miami Hurricanes took the field for their first day of fall camp. The Hurricanes, who were sporting some brand new adidas practice gear, have a lot of question marks on their team this season and a lot of holes to fill.
That’s what fall camp is for, however, and we were there to take in some of the action (the 15 minutes that were open to the media) on the first day of camp.
- The one person that stood out to me was Joseph Yearby. Yearby, who was reportedly missing for most of the summer, looks like he gained a ton of good weight. He’s competing for the starting running back job with Gus Edwards, who also looks to be in great shape, and he helped himself out this summer by putting on the extra weight.

- Mark Walton, who will also be competing for the running back job, changed his number from 4 to 1.
- Kendrick Norton is another guy that impressed me with his size. Norton will be in the defensive tackle rotation this season and if his conditioning is any indication, he’s going to have a really solid freshman season.
- Christopher Herndon IV and Standish Dobard will be competing for the starting tight end job during camp and Herndon IV looks ready to compete. Herndon is at 255 pounds this season and he looks the part. Dobard looks pretty much the same as he did all of last year, but it’s hard to tell how his conditioning has improved in just 15 minutes.
- Mike Wyche looked to be a lot slimmer than he did at the start of last years camp, which is obviously a good sign. Calvin Heurtelou and Courtel Jenkins both looked to be in good shape heading into camp and they’ll both play a big role on the defensive line. Anthony Moten is another guy that looked to be in good shape.

- After practice coach Al Golden seemed to have something bothering him, but did say that he was excited about this group, in particular the wide receiving unit. Golden continued his praise towards quarterback Brad Kaaya, again stating that this is his team and he’s ready to lead them.
- Deon Bush also had high praise for the wide receiver group, “They look great out there .. there’s a lot of talent over there”. He also added that he thinks the talent of the receiving group will make the secondary a better unit this season.
- Bush also said that he feels “better than I’ve ever felt in my career” and added that he’s 100% coming into this year.
- Braxton Berrios, who said he’s lost some weight but added “a lot” of muscle, told reporters that he knows the team is going to be very good next season and the team doesn’t care about outside expectations.
- Team unity was a big topic amongst the players today and every player said that this team is a lot tighter than they were last season.
- Chad Thomas was asked what the expectations were for his defense this season and he quickly said “big expecations” with a smile on his face. He also added that he believes that the team will have a dominant defense in 2015.
- Rashawn Scott said that he felt good being back on the practice field and that he feels healthy coming into camp. Scott also said that he “won’t let Stacy have a let down” when talking about Coley’s struggles last season. Scott also believes that the coaches will open up the playbook more in the passing game.
Overall it was a good first day of camp and there are no injuries coming out of Thursday’s practice. We were told that Jaquan Johnson and Ryan Mayes were held out of some drills, but it’s not believed to be serious.
Friday is media day and the entire practice will be open to the media so we’ll have even more coverage for you guys tomorrow.
