Defensive Backs

Miami lost defensive back Antonio Crawford in the off season which certainly hurts depth, but there are veterans patrolling the secondary. Also, Rayshawn Jenkins is returning to the secondary after sitting out last season due to a back injury. He definitely will help and contribute during the season if he can stay healthy. No longer will walk-ons line up at Free Safety. Dallas Crawford also returns to the secondary. He didn’t have an outstanding season last year, but he had a tremendous spring.

Deon Bush and Tracy Howard will have to take the reigns of the secondary and the defense as a whole. Bush was playing at an All-American level last year before his injury in mid-season. Also, Golden has said Bush will line up some at Cornerback this year. Don’t worry, this is a good thing. Bush’s speed and hips will be a huge benefit to that position.

Howard struggled with his confidence last season, but he could make an impact this season. The former five-star wants to finish on a high note this being his senior season. His teammates, Artie Burns and Corn Elder have proved to be excellent corners and have made plays.

Newcomer safety Jaquan Johnson early enrolled in the spring, and has got a grasp of the playbook. Most fans are excited to see this freshman play because of his sheer ability and football IQ. In addition, Miami brought in Shedrick Redwine, who has impressed in summer workouts.

In the Golden era, the secondary has been a weak link because of injuries and depth. Now, the secondary is arguably the best group of players. Most of these guys in the defense have been in this scheme for four years. They should know the scheme backwards and forwards. Yet, if Coach D doesn’t make any adjustments and let these guys play. Fans will see the same results. But let’s hope that changed at least a little bit.
