Jamal Carter – Safety
Jamal Carter is one of those extremely talented players that just has to figure everything out in order to be great. Carter has great size and quickness, and can also knock out a couple of people on some hard hits. Carter has the tools that you want a safety to have, but for whatever reason, he has yet to put it together, but I think this is the year.
Carter admitted to not knowing the playbook well enough as a freshman, and did show improvements as a sophomore, especially knowing the playbook. This is going to be his third year on campus and he should know the system perfectly by now. When I asked defensive backs coach Paul Williams what Carter needs to do to take the next step in his career, he quickly replied with “just being consistent.”
Consistency has been Carter’s biggest problem in his career, and that’s something the coaches will be looking out of him this season. The safety spot is deep, but there is room for Carter to show what he’s got. Carter played in every game last season, recording 26 tackles and intercepting 1 pass.
Miami’s safety situation is in pretty good shape, and if Jamal Carter can figure things out this year, it could be their best unit on defense this season.
