Miami Hurricanes Football: News, Notes, Quotes From Miami’s First Scrimmage
By Juan Toribio
The Miami Hurricanes football team had their first scrimmage of camp on Thursday night. As is usually the case with Al Golden scrimmages, the first one’s are more about teaching and the second one is more about competition.
The scrimmage was completely closed to the media so we couldn’t get to see anything, but we got a chance to talk to some of the players after the scrimmage:
– Al Golden said he was pleased with his team’s performance and is especially happy that there were no injuries on Thursday. That’s usually the most important part of these scrimmages, so glad to hear that everyone is fine.
– Chris Herndon IV said that the offense had a good day on Thursday. He mentioned that Herb Waters had the biggest touchdown reception of the day, he said it was from about 35 yards out. Herndon also said that Trayone Gray had a big run in Thursday’s scrimmage, but that was called back by a holding penalty by the offense. Also mentioned that Rashawn Scott pulled down a touchdown.
– Standish Dobard said that he had an “OK” practice and said that he should’ve made some more plays. He did say that the tight end group had a good day, including a nice fade route touchdown by David Njoku, and also added that Jerome Washington had a good scrimmage.
– Rayshawn Jenkins, who was playing in his first real action “game” in over a year, said that he felt good. Jenkins also had an interception on the night. Coach Golden called him one of their smartest players.
“He’s a tremendous athlete,” said Golden on Jenkins. “He’s one of our smartest players and we just have to keep pushing him,” he added.
– As far as the quarterbacks go, Golden said that they all played well and he also said that Vincent Testaverde Jr. dealt with the third team during Thursday’s scrimmage.
– Demetrius Jackson said that he’s a defensive player he thinks that the defense won the scrimmage, but added that the offense and defense will be “something to be reckoned with this year.”
– Braxton Berrios said he had a couple of catches on Thursday. But did say that Jamal Carter hit him pretty hard at the end of one of his catches. Berrios also said that the defense looked good and that they play “really fast. That’s one thing that I took away.”
– Jermaine Grace said that Raphael Kirby was able to get a sack on Thursday and also forced a fumble on Gus Edwards in what Grace’s called the biggest hit of the entire scrimmage. Grace also said that he got a sack on a blitz. He said the defense had a handful of sacks.
– The buzz surrounding the team after Thursday’s scrimmage was all on freshman Kendrick Norton. From what we’ve seen so far in camp, Norton absolutely looks the part of a nose tackle and he impressed a lot of his teammates, especially Jermaine Grace.”
“I love him at nose tackle, he’s a beast. He had like three sacks today,” said Grace.
One of those sacks resulted in a strip fumble, which Coach Golden called a “smart” play. The quarterback wasn’t named, but Golden said Norton spent all day going up against the 2nd and 3rd team, so the quarterback was either Malik Rosier or Testaverde.
– Grace mentioned Tyriq McCord and Marques Gayot as some of the second-team linebackers that had a good scrimmage. Mentioned that Gayot kept asking him a lot of questions and playing well. Darrion Owens was with the first team during this scrimmage.
– Grace said that he only had two tackles on Thursday, but he said he got good hits on Dobard and Edwards.
