Miami Hurricanes Football: Hurricanes Announce Depth Chart Against Bethune Cookman

facebooktwitterreddit

The Miami Hurricanes just lost Gus Edwards to a season-ending foot injury and they also just released their depth chart for their game against Bethune Cookman.

The Hurricanes are heavy favorites for this game, but now fans (and media) will have an idea of who won some of the position battles during training camp. Miami plays Bethune Cookman in six days so let’s take a look at who the Hurricanes will be starting on Saturday.

Offense

Okay, so Brad Kaaya is the starting quarterback and there’s definitely no surprise there. We already knew the five starters on the offensive line: Trevor Darling, Alex Gall, Nick Linder, Daniel Isidora, Sunny Odogwu.

Standish Dobard is the starting tight end, and a surprise comes at the backup spot where Jake O’Donnell is listed as “OR” backup with Jerome Washington. Christopher Herndon will get most backup tight end opportunities, however, and he’s listed as the starter at H-back with David Njoku behind him.

Rashawn Scott gets the start at wide receiver, and that’s no surprise. He’s a stud. Lawrence Cager is his backup, and that just shows that he’s going to play A LOT and he’ll contribute to this team. He’s also a stud.

This is the other part of the offensive depth chart:

Joseph Yearby and Mark Walton are listed as co-starters, with Trayone Gray being the third guy. That’s no surprise, and we’ll see how they produce now with the loss of Gus Edwards.

Stacy Coley is the starter at the slot, and Canes fans desperately hope he can go back to the Coley everyone saw and loved during his freshman season. Herb Waters gets the start at the second wide receiver spot, and fans all over are happy as hell over that. Waters hasn’t been used much, but he’ll give his chance in his senior year.

Defense:

Ufomba Kamalu gets the start at the end spot with Chad Thomas and RJ McIntosh as his backups. Thomas will play all over the defensive line so please don’t freak out over him not being listed as the starter. McIntosh has received a crazy amount of praise during camp so it’ll be interesting to see what he can do.

Calvin Heurtelou and Courtel Jenkins will be the two dudes down the middle, and that’s a good duo for Miami. Jenkins is really underrated, in my opinion. Kendrick Norton is ahead of Michael Wyche and that says a lot about Norton. The kid is a freak and will help this defense a ton as a freshman.

The linebacker spots have Raphael Kirby and Jermaine Grace starting at inside linebackers, with Darrion Owens and Trent Harris listed as the starters at outside linebacker. Harris will be a pass rusher, while Owens will play a natural linebacker spot. Demetrius Jackson is listed ahead of Al-Quadin Muhammad on the depth chart, and I don’t buy that at all.

Tracy Howard is a senior and he has to ball out, and he’ll get the opportunity to start. But if he struggles, he’ll have a quick leash as a starting cornerback. Dallas Crawford is listed as the starter at safety and he’ll be more comfortable back there now in his second year as a safety.

Deon Bush is listed as a co-starter with Jamal Carter, but there’s no doubt that Bush is the starter. Carter and freshman Jaquan Johnson will battle all season for the backup spot.

Artie Burns is listed as the other cornerback, which is not a surprise. He’s the best outside corner the Hurricanes have. Freshman Sheldrick Redwine is his backup, which shows me that he had a better camp than fellow freshman Michael Jackson.

Corn Elder is the nickel corner after Antonio Crawford’s departure and that’s an upgrade for the Hurricanes.

All in all, this is just an initial depth chart and we all know Al Golden likes to play mind games with these. Take this with a grain of salt, but at least we have an idea of who’s going to play and who’ll redshirt, and who had a good camp.

Hurricanes fans got horrible news today, but it’s almost football season, y’all.
