Miami Hurricanes Basketball: October Recruiting Update
By Austin Sapin
After losing DeJon Jarreau and Brison Gresham to UMass a week ago, the Miami Hurricanes lost a bit of the momentum that was gained throughout the summer. With a few spots still open for the 2016 recruiting class, the Miami coaching staff has been quite busy to get that momentum back in the month of October.
Huell and Carter make their official visits
This past weekend, top target Dewan Huell and four-star Tyson Carter made their official visits to Coral Gables.
The five-star Huell from Miami Norland High would be a huge coup for the Canes who’ve rarely attracted big-time talent on the recruiting front. Keeping a hometown kid that is so highly touted would also be a huge step forward for the Miami program as a whole.
While the Hurricanes have the “hometown advantage”, they’ll face stiff competition from his other suitors, Florida St. and South Carolina. There is no timetable for a decision yet, but Huell has announced he will take his official visit to Tallahassee on October 9
th
and will wrap up his visits in Columbia on October 16
th
. As the Jarreau and Gresham decision showed, the recruiting experts who all thought they would come to Miami are often wrong on their commitment predictions. With that being said, many feel Florida St. has the inside track on the No. 21 prospect according to ESPN at the moment. Check out some of Huell’s highlights if you haven’t seen him play. It’s worth it.
For the less-heralded visitor, point guard Tyson Carter, the University of Miami was his fourth official visit. Prior to coming to Coral Gables, the Starkville, Mississippi native had already visited his hometown school, Mississippi St., as well as Memphis and Arizona St. He’ll have one more official visit with Ohio St. on October 9th before making his decision. The feeling from many seemed to be that Carter has Mississippi St. in the lead at the moment. Again, these so-called “experts” are really just giving their best guess and while it may not mean much, Carter at least looked like he had a good time on his visit to ‘The U’.
Top 100 recruit Bruce Brown announces Miami visit
Even with Carter having visited Coral Gables this past weekend, the Hurricanes have continued to bring in guards from throughout the country.
Last week, 6’4’’ shooting guard Bruce Brown announced his visit to Miami, which will take place sometime between October 22nd and October 24th. Brown told SNY.tv he is also considering Purdue, UMass and Indiana, who seems to be the favorite.
While bringing in Huell is the best-case scenario, getting Bruce Brown wouldn’t be too shabby either. Brown is ranked No. 30 overall in the ESPN Top 100 and would be a potential difference-maker in 2016.
Bryce Aiken commitment decision likely coming soon
While Bruce Brown has just started his visiting process, Bryce Aiken should be nearing his decision soon after taking his third and final official visit to Miami over a week ago.
After returning from that trip, Aiken told SNY.tv that he wanted to make a decision within two weeks. Even though an announcement date hasn’t been released, Canes fans should expect to hear his choice soon.
The four-star point guard from New Jersey will decide between Miami, Harvard and Seton Hall.
Even though nothing is certain, the decisions of Aiken, Brown and Carter could very well affect each other. There is no way all three guards will commit to Miami due to their similarities in size and position, but I’d say the Hurricanes have a pretty good chance of at least getting one.
After the Jarreau and Gresham shock decision, the Canes have to lock down a few of these recruits. While that recruiting momentum from the summer may have been lost, it could jump right back up if things fall the right way for Miami.
