Stop laughing! Well, this choice is kind of a joke. But, believe it or not, when a NFL head coach joins the college football ranks to head up a program it usually turns out pretty good. For example, Jim Mora (UCLA), Nick Saban (Alabama), Pete Carroll (USC), Jim Harbaugh (Michigan), Lou Holtz (Notre Dame), Bobby Petrino (Arkansas/Louisville), and the list goes on.

The game of college football is very different from that in the NFL as is the players’ mindset.

Quite honestly, I doubt Philbin would ever be interested in a job with the Hurricanes, but you never know. Work is work. And, the position would still come with prestige.

Leading the Miami Dolphins up until he was fired this year, Philbin accumulated a 24-28 record with no playoff appearances.

Philbin’s demeanor reminds me somewhat of Dennis Erickson’s … direct, but very low-key and calm. It sure worked with Miami in the late 80’s-early 90’s, but you also had a hard-nosed, Howard Schnellenberger and fiery, Jimmy Johnson who had come before, building up the program.

I believe that Miami today needs a no nonsense, no excuses kind of a guy (not saying Philbin makes excuses). A guy that brings an intensity and accountability to all facets of the program. Nothing slips from his grasp.

Al Golden feels more like a player’s coach and I think at this point, we need a tough-minded, intense coach to bring back the swagger that’s been long missed from the Miami Hurricanes.
