Tight Ends
I almost feel like slamming my head against the wall because I know I left some great tight ends off my All-Time Team. The ‘Canes were also known as “Tight End U” and put out some studs at both the college and pro level such as: Greg Olsen, Bubba Franks, Kevin Everett, Jimmy Graham and recently, Clive Walford.
However, the two I chose were both first-round picks, had great careers at Miami, and went to numerous Pro-Bowls in the NFL:
Jeremy Shockey
Shockey is one of the most decorated players, having won titles at both the college level and NFL.
He had transferred to the University of Miami from Northeast Oklahoma A&M in 2000 and rose to First-Team All-BIG EAST honors in his sophomore season. In his junior season (2001), Shockey was an integral part of a team that won the National Championship and was a Mackey Award Finalist, First-Team All-American (CNNSI.com) and First-Team All-BIG EAST.
Shockey was drafted by the New York Giants in the first round (14th overall) where he won the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Year and was a four-time Pro-Bowler (out of five seasons playing with the Giants).
He played 10 seasons in the NFL and was a part of 2 Super Bowl Championships (XLII & XLIV).
Kellen Winslow Jr.
Winslow Jr. played for the ‘Canes from 2001 to 2003 and is the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame member, Kellen Winslow Sr. (tight end for the San Diego Chargers).
He was a true freshman during Miami’s National Title year, playing special teams and backing up Jeremy Shockey.
In his sophomore season, he was a Mackey Award Finalist and an All-American (CNNSI.com) and helped the ‘Canes reach the title game against Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl in 2003.
As a junior, Winslow Jr. won the Mackey Award and was a unanimous First-Team All American.
Winslow Jr. was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the first round (6th overall) and played in the NFL for 10 seasons. He made a Pro Bowl (in 2007).
