Trend Setters

The Miami Hurricanes throughout time had launched many of the trends in college football.

Maybe it’s because of their Hurricane swagger, which by the way, they brought that term, “swagger” to college football.

Now, everyone, every player and every team wants to be defined by their swagger. But everyone else didn’t start it nor will they ever have as much swagger as The U.

You know that time in a ball game, leading into the 4th quarter when all the players and coaches put up four fingers? That’s right, Miami made it famous and so widely used. I’m not saying they invented it, but coach Schnellenberger brought the tradition over from Alabama and Miami was using it while they were kicking everyone’s butt and it stuck with every other team up until now.

Also, uniforms are now so widely used for recruiting. The cooler the uni combos the more it can attract recruits (look at the Oregon Ducks). But let’s not forget which program had the original huge Nike deal.

In 1987, Miami signed a contract with a retailer, Nike, for all-sports, a first of its kind. So let’s not forget who the original Nike school is (sorry, Oregon).

Furthermore, and relating to uniforms, Miami used to tuck their jerseys under their pads (showing off the six-pack), wore helmet visors with fluorescent inserts and wrapped tape around their face masks. The ‘Canes were simply stylin’ on the field.

Lastly, I had recently watched one of Miami’s old arch enemies, Notre Dame, run through smoke …  I’ve seen many other teams also run through smoke. I’m not even going to get into that.
