While the Miami Hurricanes basketball team failed to make it to the Elite 8 for the first time in program history this weekend, the Hurricanes baseball team put up a show at The Light this weekend.

The Hurricanes continue their impressive string of games as they swept the 17th ranked Clemson Tigers this past weekend and the serious did not lack any excitement or drama.

If you missed out on this weekend’s actions. Don’t worry, we got you covered with a weekend recap.

Friday

More from Canes Warning

Friday games have become must-watch at The Light over the last couple of weekends. And most of that is because of Willie Abreu. Abreu connected on his second walk-off homer of the season, giving the ‘Canes an 9-8 win over the Tigers on Friday.

The Hurricanes have had a reputation of being the Cardiac Canes over the past couple of years and this team has become no exception.

Everything was looking good for the Hurricanes early on. The Tigers struck first with two runs, but then the Canes mounted a five-run fourth to give them a 5-2 lead.

After allowing a solo home run to Clemson catcher Chris Okey in the first inning, Woodrey settled and pitched well for the Hurricanes on Friday. The lefty has really struggled this season, especially in the early innings. He gave up five hits and two runs (one earned), and struck out four surrendered five hit and two runs (one earned) striking out four.

While the Canes had a nice lead, Clemson stormed back and took the lead in the ninth inning off closer Bryan Garcia. Drew Wharton came up huge for the Tigers with a two-out two-run single that gave the Tigers a 8-7 lead.

And then Abreu happened.

For the second straight weekend, Abreu sent one over the fence, this time going deep to left field. Abreu then slid into home plate and was mobbed by his teammates.

Saturday

Saturday didn’t include a walk-off home run, but it did include a walk-off, the second in as many days for the Hurricanes.

The hero this time? Edgar Michaelangeli.

With Johnny Ruiz standing at second in the bottom of the 11th inning, Michaelangeli shot one into the outfield to drive in Ruiz and giving the Hurricanes a 5-4 win over the Tigers in extra innings.

The win gave the Hurricanes 19 wins on the year and it also gave their skipper, Jim Morris, his 1000th win as the manager of the Miami Hurricanes. An incredible achievement for Morris.

Starter Michael Mediavilla, who has been terrific for the Hurricanes thus far this season, really struggled with his command on Saturday. Mediavilla threw 100 pitches over four innings, walking four and striking out 6. The lefty starter gave up just two runs, both coming on a Seth Beer homer.

Miami clinched a series-win against yet another ranked opponent and went for the sweep on Sweep Sunday.

Sunday

Miami went in trying to get a sweep, and they did just that on Sunday.

The Hurricanes offense stepped up yet again on Sunday, putting up 10 runs, leading the Canes past the Tigers, 10-5.

Carl Chester was the catalyst all weekend long and Sunday was no exception. The sophomore got on base four times on Sunday and 13 times throughout the weekend.

With Chester leading the way and a five-run 5th inning for the Hurricanes, there was just too much offense for the Tigers to overcome giving Miami it’s 20th win of the season. Miami is the first ACC team to get to 20 wins this season.

Lefty starter Danny Garcia had a decent outing on Sunday. Garcia allowed three home runs, but they were all solo home runs. The Tigers scattered 8 hits on Sunday, but failed to make any significant impact and weren’t able to muster up a big inning against the left-hander or the Canes bullpen.

With this sweep, the Hurricanes are now playing their best baseball of the year and they’re picking the right time to do it. The Hurricanes now go back on the road to face in-state FAU on Wednesday.
