Thursday: No. 5 Clemson at Georgia Tech, 7:30 p.m., ESPN
The first of a huge two-game homestand for the Yellow Jackets. Clemson has a deceiving 103-33 point differential through two games. They beat FBS South Carolina State 59-0 Saturday after a 19-13 season-opening win over Auburn and a 30-24 win over Troy. Troy is in the Sun Belt conference, as is Appalachian State.
Clemson Quarterback Deshon Watson was the near unanimous choice as the ACC first team Quarterback. Louisville’s Lamar Jackson is the unquestionable first team ACC Quarterback as we enter the last week of September. ESPN also has Jackson as the overwhelming favorite for the Heisman. He received nine of ten votes from their panel.
Through two games, Watson is completing just 56.7 percent of his passes. He completed 67.9 percent of his passes over the last two seasons. Watson’s TD/Int rate has dropped as has his QB Rating and passing yards per game.
The Yellow Jackets run the old school triple option. They rank 18th nationally with 257.3 rushing yards per game. Georgia Tech doesn’t throw it much, but when they do they are averaging over ten yards per attempt.
The Rambling spread the rushing attempts out. Three Yellow Jackets have over 100 yards rushing this season and two more have over 90. Wayne Gallman gets the bulk of the carries for the Tigers and Watson has three good receiving targets.
Georgia Tech leads the all-time series 51-26 with two ties.
