James Jackson, Football, 1996-2000
Jackson was a part of a Miami backfield that had an embarrassment of riches. After missing most of his true freshman season, Jackson rushed for 595 yards and six touchdowns, while averaging 7.3 yards per carry as a redshirt freshman in 1997.
Jackson shared the backfield with Edgerrin James for two seasons. James was the primary ball carrier and rushed for over 2400 yards and scored 30 touchdowns on the ground in ‘97 and ‘98.
Jackson took over the reigns and shared the backfield was Clinton Portis in 1999 and 2000. Jackson led the 2000 team with 1006 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns. He was a second-team Big East selection on a team that finished the season 11-1 and second in the nation.
Jackson finished his career with 2,953 yards rushing, good enough for fourth in school history, just seven yards behind James. His 541 rushing attempts are second in school history, 29 rushing touchdowns fourth and 32 overall touchdowns, third.
Jackson was drafted in the third round of the 2001 NFL Draft and spent five seasons in the league with Cleveland, Arizona, and Green Bay.
