18) Ted Hendricks (1966-68)

The second Miami Hurricane inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he was known as the Mad Stork during his playing days. Hendricks was one of the most feared defensive player during his 15 years with the Packers, Raiders and Colts.

A native of Guatemala, Hendricks played high school football at Hialeah. He enrolled at Miami in 1965 as a 6’7 218-pound defensive end. Hendricks accumulated 327 tackles in his three seasons (freshmen were not eligible then) with the Hurricanes.

He finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting that season and was the only defensive player in the top ten. According to his University of Miami Hall of Fame Bio “In his Junior year he caused nine turnovers, by fumble recovery, stolen ball, pass interception or blocked kick. Against Pitt, Ted blocked a kick and recovered the ball 20 yards down-field.”

Modern-day stats like tackles for loss, sacks and fumbles forced and recovered were not kept. This numbers would likely have been record-setting.

Hendricks was a member of three Raiders Superbowl teams and went out a winner. He tied for the team lead in sacks with Lyle Alzado as the Raiders won their third and last Superbowl in his last season.
