22. Andy Gustafson (1948-68)
According to his bio in the University of Miami Hall of Fame: “Led UM to a 93-65 record in 16 seasons as head coach in what became known as “The Glory Years” of Hurricanes football…developed the “Drive Series” belly option, considered the forerunner to the veer and wishbone offenses…his teams went to four bowl games and nine players earned All-American status”
Was the first Miami coach to lead the program to back to back bowl games. The Hurricanes would face Clemson in back to back seasons.They played in the 1951 Orange Bowl and 1952 Gator Bowl.
The Hurricanes faced an undefeated Clemson team in the Orange Bowl on January 1, 1951. Clemson won the game 15-14 on a Safety in the fourth quarter.
The rematch would come the next season. They met in the Gator Bowl in Miami’s first appearance in a Bowl game other than the Orange. The Hurricanes outlasted the Tigers 14-0 in an ugly offensive performance by both teams. Miami icon Jim Dooley had four interceptions as the Hurricanes were able to overcome only five first downs on offense to get their second bowl win.
The game was Miami’s last bowl appearance for ten seasons and last bowl win for 15.
