The Miami and Florida State women will meet in the first of two showdowns between the schools on the hardwood this weekend. The ladies will take to the court first at the ACC Tournament in Conway, South Carolina. The men will play on Saturday in Tallahassee.

Miami and Florida State will meet for a third time for the second consecutive year. The teams are also playing in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals for the second straight season. Fifth seeded Miami upset the fourth seeded Seminoles 74-56 in last season’s ACC Tournament.

The Seminoles won both of this year’s games by an average margin of 12 points. Florida State won both regular season matchups in 2016 as well before the Hurricanes pulled the slight upset.

Miami enters the game 22-7, ranked 16th in the country and is the seventh seed in the ACC Tournament. Florida State is 25-5, ranked 8th/12th in the polls, and is the second seed in the ACC. The Seminoles have dominated the all-time series with a 41-13 edge.

Miami is coming off of a relatively easy 87-71 victory over Georgia Tech in the second round of the ACC Tournament.  The Hurricanes have defeated the Yellow Jackets in their last two games. The won 75-70 on Senior Day on Sunday at the Watsco Center.

Miami jumped out to a 17-4 lead on the Yellow Jackets in the first quarter of their ACC Tournament meeting and were never seriously threatened after that. Georgia Tech never got closer than nine and the lead was in double digits for the entire second half.

The Hurricanes led 19-8 after one quarter and 47-25 at halftime. Keyona Hayes led Miami with 16, All-ACC guard Adrienne Motley had 15 and reserve center Emese Hof had 14 points, five rebounds and three blocks.

Despite finishing second in the ACC this season behind Notre Dame, the Seminoles have arguably been the ACC’s most dominant team. They lead the ACC in scoring averaging 80.5 points per game are third defensively allowing 57.9 and have the league’s best scoring margin at 22.6. That’s more than three points better than Duke who is second.

The ‘Noles high octane offense features good balance. Six players average over eight points per game. They are an excellent shooting team and three-point shooting team. FSU finished third in the conference in both categories at 46.5 and 35.8 percent respectively.

Three common factors contributed to Miami’s losses in the two game against the Seminoles earlier this season. Turnovers, Florida State’s ability to get to the free throw line and rebounding were big keys in both of the Seminoles victories.

Miami committed 18 turnovers in each game, were out rebounded by an average of 14.5 per game and allowed the Seminoles to get to the free-throw line 57 times combined in the two games.
