Miami Leads All-Time Series 8-6

Miami won their first of four straight Bowl victories under Butch Davis behind one of the most incredible defensive performances in Miami history. Miami defensive back Tremain Mack returned a fumble and interception for touchdowns and set up a third with a blocked field goal.

The Hurricane defense kept Virginia’s offense that featured future NFL Stars Aaron Books, Tiki Barber and Thomas Jones in check. Brooks and Jones were only backups during the 1996 season.

Both came on in relief after injuries to the starters. Virginia starting Quarterback Tim Sherman went out with an arm injury and Barber had only seven carries for 14 yards after the ACC Player of the Year left with a bruised hip.

Jones finished with 14 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown, while Brooks was 12-23 for 142 yards and had 11 carries for 60 yards.

That was the teams’ only non-conference meeting. They met for the second time eight years later in Miami’s first year in the ACC. The Hurricanes won by the identical 31-21 score. Miami has won the last two meetings after Virginia had taken four of the previous five.
