Florida State entered the game 10-0 and ranked number one, the Hurricanes were 8-0 and ranked second. The game was tight defensively through the first three quarters. The Seminoles led 13-7 as the game went to the fourth.
Florida State extended their lead to 16-7 in the fourth quarter on a Gerry Thomas 20 yard field goal. FSU had failed get a touchdown on third and goal from the four.
A Carlos Huerta 45 yard field goal cut the lead to 16-10 later in the fourth. Miami took the lead with 3:01 remaining on a one yard touchdown run by Larry Jones. Both offenses were stymied throughout the game. The Miami offense was led by Stephen McGuire who finished with 145 yards rushing.
