Toledo September 23

Miami 24 Toledo 14-1987

Miami Leads Series 1-0

Toledo gave Miami one of its toughest tests during their 1987 national championship season. Miami entered the game 8-0 and was ranked third in the country. They had accepted an Orange Bowl invitation earlier in the day to face top ranked Oklahoma.

Toledo entered the game 3-6-1 and was playing its final game of the season. The Hurricanes also struggled a week earlier in a 27-13 defeat of Virginia Tech. In the four games prior to beating the Hokies, the Hurricanes had won by an average score of 47-8.

Miami needed a 15 yard fumble to help them earn the victory. Incredibly, the Rockets out gained Miami 307 yards to 294. The rest of the Hurricanes scoring came on a 41 yard field goal by Greg Cox and pair of one yard scores.

Quarterback Steve Walsh threw a one yard touchdown pass to running back Cleveland Gary and Melvin Bratton had a one yard run.

Miami closed out the regular season with a 24-0 win over tenth ranked Notre Dame the following week and a 20-16 win over eighth ranked South Carolina two weeks later.

The Hurricanes captured their second national championship on New Year’s Night with a 20-14 victory over the Sooners in the Orange Bowl.
