Miami 28 Georgia Tech 13, 2000 Gator Bowl

Series Tied 11-11

This was arguably the game that began Miami’s dominance in the subsequent three seasons. Georgia Tech was ranked seventh in the country entering November before late season losses at Virginia and Wake Forest dropped them to 17th entering the Gator Bowl with an 8-3 record.

Miami was 8-4 and 23rd entering the match-up with the Yellow Jackets. featured a lot more offense than the final score would indicate. The ‘Canes and Yellow Jackets combined for 909 yards of total offense.

Georgia Tech’s miscues cost them the game. Luke Manget missed two field goals and two interceptions thrown by Joe Hamilton continually thwarted Yellow Jacket drives.

Ken Dorsey began his legacy in the game. Dorsey and Kenny Kelly had shared the Quarterback duties all season. Dorsey was 7-15 for 81 yards and a touchdown, while Kelly struggled. Kelly finished 9-17 for 127 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Clinton Portis also flashed his future stardom. Portis carried 12 times for 117 yards, including a 73 yard touchdown run. James Jackson added 116 yards on 21 carries. The Hurricanes ran for 239 yards on 39 carries as a team.

The win was Miami’s third straight in a Bowl game and second year in a row winning a bowl game. All three were under Butch Davis. They would win the Sugar Bowl against Davis the following year to go 4-0 in bowl games in during his tenure.
