Miami 59 Syracuse 0, 2001

Miami Leads Series 15-7

Miami’s 2001 season was one of if not the greatest in the history of college football. Miami entered the game against Syracuse after barely surviving an upset bid at Boston College a week prior.

Through the season’s first seven games, the Hurricanes margin of victory had not been lower than 22 points. That included a season opening 33-7 win at Penn State and 49-27 victory over then number 14 Florida State.

Miami’s matchup with the 14th ranked Orangemen was the first in a historic two-week stretch for the team some dub as the great college football team of all time.

The Hurricanes dominated the game in every way measurable. They led 10-0 after one quarter, extended the lead to 24-0 at halftime and they scored double figures in every quarter on their way to a 59-0 victory.

They followed that up a week later with 61-7 victory over Washington to avenge their only defeat in 2000. The combined Margin of 119-7 is the largest against ranked opponents in back to back weeks in the history of college football.

Miami outgained Syracuse 556-185, had 25 first downs to the Orangemen’s 12 and accomplished all this despite having the ball for nine less minutes. Frank Gore and Clinton Portis both went over 100 yards rushing and Ken Dorsey had four touchdown passes.
