The 2017-18 Miami Hurricanes basketball team will be a team that is going to get younger, but likely more talented. Jim Larranaga is bringing in a top ten recruiting class, but loses Senior leaders Davon Reed and Kamari Murphy.

The cornerstones and leaders of the 2017-18 team will be Senior to Ja’Quan Newton and rising Sophomore Bruce Brown. Newton was a team captain this year with Reed and Murphy. He and Brown are likely to be the captains next season. Junior Anthony Lawrence is another possibility.

Newton is going to have to step up his leadership skills in a pivotal season for the Hurricanes. He was suspended for three games each at the end of the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Newton and Brown are the only Hurricanes returning for next season that averaged in double figures.

Newton averaged 13.5 points per game and Brown 11.8. Brown flashed the potential to be able to take games over in the big games this past season. He led Miami to wins over North Carolina and Duke. Brown scored 30 against the Tar Heels and 25 against Duke. He also had 21 in the loss in the ACC Tournament to the Tar Heels.
