Noticeable in Mark Richt’s post spring scrimmage press conference was that he did not mention Jack Allison when discussing the performance of the Hurricanes Quarterbacks.
Matt Porter of the Palm Beach Post is reporting that Allison injured his right throwing shoulder after he took a sack in Saturday’s scrimmage. The result came on a broken play per Porter.
Porter reported that Allison was seen departing the Hurricanes football facility in a sling. The early speculation is that he has a minor separation of his right shoulder. His status for the remainder of the spring is in doubt. Miami’s team doctors will make the final determination.
Richt discussed his hesitancy earlier this week about letting his Quarterbacks get hit.
"“My plan right now,” he said, “which is a little bit different, is to let the quarterbacks have a normal jersey and play ball. Is it a sack, is it not a sack — in a normal scrimmage, we don’t know. This scrimmage, if I don’t chicken out, we’ll know if it’s a sack or not. We’ll know if a guy makes a move and gets five yards, or if he gets tackled and fumbles the ball, or he secures the ball or whatever it may be. It’ll look more like a true game on those snaps because we’re going to let the quarterbacks play ball.”"
Richt was unaware of any injuries suffered on Saturday and when asked about if his team made it through the scrimmage healthy he said:
"“I hope so…I didn’t see anybody get carted off, which is nice…I mean, I am so involved in calling the plays and just going. [Head athletic trainer] Vinny [Scavo] will hit me up and tell me what’s up in the next day or two.”"
Allison was one of the gems of Richt’s first recruiting class at Miami in 2016. ESPN rated the four-star prospect as the sixth best pocket passer in the class and the 68th best player in the ESPN 300.
Many expected Allison to be Kaaya’s primary back-up in 2016 and then challenge for the starting position in 2017. The 6’5 QB from Palmetto High School in South Miami-Dade spent the 2016 season as the primary scout team Quarterback.

Going into spring practice, Allison and Malik Rosier had been considered the early leaders to grab the lead in the race to start this fall. Instead, Allison had fallen behind rising junior Malik Rosier and sophomore to be Evan Shirreffs.
Shirreffs wasn’t even ranked by the mothership coming out of high school.
Appearing on the Joe Rose show on WQAM late last month, Richt said that they would likely discuss who has taken the lead to be the starting quarterback when spring practice concludes. Freshman N’Kosi Perry who is expected to challenge to be the starter will not be on campus until June.
Porter reported that Allison had his best series when the injury occurred. Porter’s source said that he “had completed several passes in a row” before being sacked and getting hurt.
Even before the injury, Allison was reportedly working exclusively with the second and third strings with Vincent Testaverde. Rosier and Shirreffs worked with the first string.

Freshman Cade Weldon who enrolled in January did not get on reps. He was not ready to play according to Richt. No reasons were given, but Weldon is expected to play in the next scrimmage April 15.
