The University of Miami has announced that they have extended women’s basketball coach Katie Meier through 2024. The Hurricanes are 231-152 in Meier’s 12 seasons in Coral Gables.
They are coming off of arguably their most successful season in Meier’s tenue. The Hurricanes hosted a subregional this season for the first time since 1992. Miami finished the season 24-9 and with the number 19 ranking in the country.
Miami finished a spot higher than its preseason ranking. It was the first time that the UM women have been ranked in the postseason poll since finishing number 11 in 2011-12. The Hurricanes fell a game short of their second sweet 16 in school history.
After needing a Keyonna Hayes layup with 1.2 seconds left in the first round to oust Florida Gulf Coast, the Hurricanes lost to 12th seeded Quinnipiac at the Watsco Center in the second round.
Miami has never won two games in the Women’s NCAA Tournament. Their only Sweet 16 appearance in school history occurred before the Women’s field expanded to 64 teams in 1993.
Miami Athletic Director Blake James discussed the extension:
"“Coach Meier has demonstrated the excellence that Miami pursues every day and she is a valued member of our family…We look forward to her leading our women’s basketball program for years to come and to continue building champions, on the court and off.”"
Meier who played collegiately at Duke coached four seasons at Charlotte before taking over the Miami program. In 16 seasons as a collegiate head coach, she is 307-197. Meier will be inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame next week.
She was the Associated Press National Coach of the Year in 2011 and the USA Basketball Coach of the Year in 2013.

Meier has created a program that contends for a NCAA Tournament berth annually. The Hurricanes have played in six of the last seven NCAA Tournament.
Meier discussed meeting with Blake last month to discuss the extension.
"“After the season, when Blake approached me with the extension, I was humbled and extremely grateful. I was also very excited…Through my conversations with Blake and Deputy AD Jennifer Strawley, it became clear that we all want this program to operate at the highest possible level. I feel so strongly that I want to be a part of that continued growth."
She then discussed she and her staff’s accomplishments and what it’s going to take for them to get to the next level.
"“I’m proud of what my staff has been able to accomplish so far, and yet we all are pushing for that next level. Commitment and continuity are major factors in a program’s development and this extension provides that. Personally, I am so deeply rooted here at The U and in the Miami community, which makes this even more special.”"

Next season will be a rebuilding one for Meier. The Hurricanes lose Seniors Hayes, Adrienne Motley and Jessica Thomas. That’s their top three scorers, leading rebounder and three of their top four in assists.
