Nine players from the University of Miami were selected in 2017 NFL Draft. Only Michigan with 11 and Alabama with ten had more.

The parade of Miami players selected began when the Cleveland Browns moved up in the draft in a trade with the Cleveland Browns to the 29th pick to take Hurricanes tight end David Njoku. The Browns traded a second (33rd overall) and fourth (108th) to move up.

Miami fans had to wait two days for another Hurricane to come off the board. It was somewhat of a surprise when the second Hurricane taken was safety Rayshawn Jenkins.

Jenkins was selected in the fourth round with the 113th overall pick by the Los Angeles Chargers. He will join former Hurricanes Travis Benjamin and Denzel Perryman in Los Angeles.

Corn Elder and Danny Isidora went in the fifth round to Carolina and Minnesota. Al-Quadin Muhammad who was suspended for the 2016 season following a scandal with a rental car company went to New Orleans in the sixth round.

Perhaps the biggest shocker for those involved with the Miami program and maybe of the entire draft was Brad Kaaya’s precipitous fall. The former Hurricane Quarterback was not selected until the sixth round, the 215th overall pick by the Detroit Lions.

Kaaya will battle with Jake Ruddock to be Matthew Stafford’s primary backup. He will reunite with his former college Head Coach Al Golden who is now the Lions special teams coach. Stafford was coached in college at Georgia by current Hurricanes Head Coach Mark Richt.

Three Hurricanes were picked in the seventh round. Stacy Coley went four picks after Kaaya to the Minnesota Vikings, Adrian Colbert was the 229th overall pick to the San Francisco 49ers and fullback Marquez Williams was selected with the 240th overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
