The Miami Hurricanes held the groundbreaking for the new Carol Soffer Football Indoor Practice Facility Thursday evening.

The facility will be a big upgrade for the Hurricanes. The ceremony was streamed on the football program’s facebook page last night.

Earlier in the day, Miami Athletic Director Blake James and Head Coach Mark Richt appeared on WQAM in Miami to discuss the groundbreaking and what the facility will be.

The Soffer facility will be built on the Greentree Practice fields. It is expected to open in time for the 2018 football season.

James was the catalyst behind the raising of $32 million to get the facility built. They are still two million dollars short of their goal.

The Soffers donated $14 million of their own money to the project. That is the biggest donation to Miami athletics in program history. James said once they secured the money from the Soffers he knew that they would be able to get the facility built.

Richt also donated one million dollars of his own money to getting the facility built. Richt’s donation made soliciting others easier according to James.

The importance of the facility is two-fold according to James. It provides young kids visiting campus everything there to be their very best and it’s also an opportunity to check all the boxes to be successful.
