Miami Hurricanes Baseball Loses Two of Three at Virginia
With their postseason hopes dim the Miami Hurricanes baseball team dropped the last two games of their three-game series with Virginia.
The Hurricanes won game one of a Saturday doubleheader after the series was delayed from a Friday rainout.
Miami won the opener 5-1 behind a brilliant pitching performance from ace Jeb Bargfeldt. Bargfeldt pitched a complete game giving up one run on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
The Hurricanes gave Miami’s ace the lead before he even took the mound. A RBI double by Johnny Ruiz drove in Carl Chester to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Second baseman Romy Gonzalez extended the lead to 4-0 with a three-run home run in the top of the top of the third. Gonzalez went 2-4 with two runs scored and the three RBIs.
Bargfeldt retired the first 11 batters before an Andrew Haseley home run with two outs in the fourth broke up the perfect game and got the Cavaliers on the board. The Cavs would only get two more hits on the afternoon.
With a game one victory behind them, Miami needed another victory to win the series and keep their dim hopes alive of extending their record NCAA Tournament streak to 45 years.
Game two of the doubleheader started similarly to the opener. Hunter Tackett drove in Ruiz with an RBI single in the top of the first to get the Hurricanes on the board before Greg Veliz took the mound.
The Hurricanes added three in the top of the second to extend the lead to 4-0. Carl Chester drove in two with a double and then scored on a single by Ruiz. The lead didn’t last long. Veliz’ night was shorted lived. UVA scored eight in the bottom of the second to erase the Hurricanes second 4-0 lead of the day.

UM fought back with two-run sixth to cut the lead in half. Any chance of a Miami comeback was thwarted when the Cavaliers scored five in the bottom of the inning to blow the game open. That ended the scoring for game two and UVA won the second game of the doubleheader 13-6.
Veliz lasted just 1.2 innings and allowing seven earned runs on six hits with three walks and one strikeout. Miami went through six pitchers. Ryan Guerra pitched 3.1 innings allowing one hit.
Virginia turned the tables in Sunday’s game by getting on the board first. They scored one in the third and two in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
The Hurricanes answered with two in the fifth on a Tackett RBI double. They tied the game in the top of the eighth when tacked scored on a Joe Gomez groundout.
UVA answered with a four-run eighth to regain the lead. The Hurricanes scored one in the ninth to close out the scoring. With losses in the last two games, Miami is likely going to have to win the ACC Tournament to get an NCAA bid.
