So much question and uncertainty surrounds the Miami Hurricanes at the quarterback position. N’Kosi Perry is on campus and ready to take aim at becoming the starting Quarterback.

The Miami Hurricanes starting a freshman at quarterback should be an outlier at an established program. Handing over the keys to an 18 year old fresh out of high school is not a recipe that can be routinely counted on for success. It is not unprecedented though.

Oklahoma Sooner quarterback Jamelle Holieway won a national championship in 1985 as a frosh. Jaylen Hurts was a few seconds away from leading the Crimson Tide to the National Championship as a Freshman last season.

More often than not freshmen Quarterbacks and especially true freshmen have floundered as starters. Miami fans do not have to look any further than three years ago when Brad Kaaya led Miami to a 6-7 record.

So many intangibles can be considered. These include roster makeup and strength of schedule when evaluating win-loss records. Sooner or later a freshman starting quarterback is likely going to be counted on to carry his team to victory. Many of them do not live up to the hype they arrive on campus with.

As it stands in terms of roster makeup, Miami is primed for a freshman quarterback usurpation. Malik Rosier is Brad Kaaya’s career backup and completed less than 50 percent of his passes during the spring scrimmages. Evan Shirreffs had notable offers from Brown, Princeton, Yale and the Virginia Military Institute.

Those reiterations of fact are not condemnations or insinuations that Rosier or Shirreffs can not secure the starting spot. Let’s be honest, they are not overwhelming boisterous declarations either. Kaaya was supposed to be this year’s starter. The roster essentially reflects that.

Mark Richt made no secret who his number one guy was during 2017’s recruiting cycle. Richt has a very casual laid back and subtle personality. He is well versed in all things quarterback. One thing that isn’t subtle for Richt? How hard it is for him to contain his excitement and Jubilee when you mention the name N’kosi Perry.
