After taking a 3-0 lead within the first four batters of the game, the Miami Hurricanes allowed 11 unanswered runs on their way to a 12-4 loss to North Carolina in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament.

The Miami Hurricanes came out of the gate swinging. Carl Chester got on base with an infield single. Right Fielder Michael Burns followed with a triple to right center field scoring Chester. Johnny Ruiz drove in Burns with a double down the left field. Ruiz would come around with the third run after a Romy Gonzalez single.

That would be all the scoring for Miami for the next seven innings. North Carolina got back in the game with a run in the bottom of the first. Tar Heels leadoff hitter Brian Miller came around to score after getting on base on a two-base Edgar Michangeli throwing error.

North Carolina took control of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman Ashton McGee hit a home run to get the Tar Heels within one. A Kyle Datres single and a Brandon Riley walk preceded a 99-minute delay. The stoppage initially occurred because of lightning. That came after the start of the game was delayed two and half hours by rain.

Jesse Lapore started the game for Miami, but after the extensive delay the Hurricanes brought in Michael Mediavilla after play resumed. The left-hander immediately issued a wild pitch to allow the runners to advance to second and third.

A Tyler Lynn sacrifice fly tied the game. UNC eventually took the lead on a Cody Roberts groundout. The Tar Heels would score three more in the sixth and four in the seventh before the Hurricanes answered with a run in the eighth. UNC tacked on one more in the bottom of the eighth to close out the scoring.

Mediavilla was ironically the only Hurricanes pitcher not charged with a run. The two he gave up were runners he inherited from Jesse Lepore. Lepore finished the day allowing four runs, three earned on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Mediavilla pitched 1.2 innings allowing one hit with three walks and two strikeouts. Walks hurt Miami throughout the ACC Tournament. They had eight in the loss to North Carolina and 22 for their four tournament games. That comes out to 6.6 walks per nine innings.

The Hurricanes lost to UNC despite multiple players having multiple hits. Chester led the way offensively with three hits and a run scored.
