Miami Hurricanes Football Five Biggest Concerns for 2017
Punter:
Justin Vogel had an All-Conference season for Miami in 2016. He averaged a career his 43.8 yards per punt. He forced 33 fair catches, had 25 punts inside the 20 and 16 punts over 50 yards. Only one of Vogel’s 64 punts last season was blocked.
The battle to be Vogel’s replacement will be between Florida transfer Jack Spicer and incoming freshman Zach Feagles. Spicer did not play in his one season at Florida. He averaged 37.4 yards per punt as a Senior in high school at Estero in Florida. Spicer’s spring workouts were inconsistent.
Feagles is the son of long-time NFL Punter and Miami alum Jeff Feagles. Jeff played three seasons for the Hurricanes. He was the punter on the 1987 National Championship team.
Jeff played 22 years in the NFL. He twice led the league in the amounts of punts. He also the NFL’s longest punt as a rookie. That was 74 yards. He was a member of the Giants 2008 Super Bowl champions.
Zach is ranked as the nation’s sixth-best punter according to Kohl’s Kicking. Feagles is going to have to improve 36.1-yard yard average during his high school career. Kohl’s analysis on Zach Feagles is:
"“Feagles has had very solid showings at multiple Kohl’s events in 2016. His strength is his rhythm, he can get hot and stay hot when punting. He has continued to increase the command of his drop. His leg strength has improved dramatically in the last six months. Feagles is doing a great job of figuring out his body and how to adjust it to hit different types of punts. He is one of the best athletes in the 2017 class and has huge upside”‘"
