Miami Alum John Jay Will Benefit from Kyle Schwarber’s Demotion
The Chicago Cubs demotion of outfielder Kyle Schwarber to their AAA farm team in Iowa will likely benefit former Miami outfielder Jon Jay. Jay signed with the Cubs in the offseason after six years in St. Louis and one in San Diego.

Jay has been outstanding for outstanding for the Cubs in a reserve role this season. No one could have foreseen that Kyle Schwarber would be having the year he is. The Cubs also have placed Jason Heyward on the ten-day disabled list.
Heyward’s brother Jacob played for the Hurricanes from 2014-16. He was a part of two College World Series teams in 2015 and ’16.
With Ben Zobrist also on the DL, Jay is likely to see start almost every day with Albert Almora and Ian Happ in the Cubs outfield.
Schwarber’s numbers have been anemic this season. He has a slash line of a .171 batting average .295 on-base percentage .378 slugging percentage and .673 OPS. He does have 12 home runs and 28 RBIs.
Jay is off to one of the best starts of his career. His slash line is .317 .401 .390 .792. The .317 batting average is the highest of Jay’s career. He has no home runs, but has added seven doubles, 12 RBIs and one stolen base in 143 plate appearances.

Schwarber was one of the Cubs best players in each of the last two postseasons. His postseason slash line are Hall of Fame numbers.
He posted 364, .451, .727, and 1.178 in the last two postseasons. He also has five home runs and ten RBIs with seven walks in 51 postseason plate appearances.
Jay is among the best players in Miami baseball history. He has the fourth-highest batting average (.378) in school history and the fifth highest hit total with 254. Jay’s 17-game hitting streaks with the Hurricanes rank in the top ten in school history.
After completing his career at Miami, Jay was selected in the second round (74th overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2006 MLB Draft. He was a key utility outfielder for the 2011 World Champions Cardinals.
He had had an outstanding 2011 season, playing in 157 games. Jay set a career high with ten home runs that season. He added 37 RBIs and hit.297 in just his second season as a major leaguer.
Jay’s ability to play multiple outfield positions was important for the Cardinals. He started 107 games total, including 65 in center and 35 in right.

For the Cubs this season Jay has continued to be a valuable utility outfielder. He has played 46 games total, starting 27 of those. He has played 22 games in left, 18 in center and 13 in right.
