Miami Hurricanes Appear on ESPN’s College Gameday Best Moments 71-100
Miami Head Coach Jimmy Johnson’s insistence to continuing throwing the ball likely cost them a second national championship in four seasons. Vinny Testaverde threw 50 passes with five of them intercepted to go along with five sacks.
He completed 26 for 285 yards without a touchdown. The Hurricanes running backs averaged five yards per carry on 34 carries for 170 yards.
Alonzo Highsmith was particularly devastating. The Hurricanes starting running back gained 119 yards on 18 carries. That’s an average of 6.6 yards per carry.
The Miami defense could not have been much better than they were. Penn State gained 162 net yards rushing, but the Penn State passing game was anemic.
Nittany Lions quarterback John Shaffer completed five of 16 passes for 53 yards and interception without a touchdown.
Miami seemed headed towards another one before a controversial fumble call at Notre Dame likely cost them back to back titles in 1988. Johnson left for the Dallas Cowboys following the season.
Florida State and Miami was quickly becoming the Nation’s most important rivalry. Each year seemed to have a major say in who would play for the national championship. Thankfully Miami usually won those games.
