Miami Hurricanes Appear on ESPN’s College Gameday Best Moments 71-100
The most recent moment involving Miami and number 80 on ESPN’s list was when the Miami football team showed up wearing fatigues as they landed in Phoenix for the 1987 Fiesta Bowl.
The incident upset many as insensitive and led Miami Head Coach Jimmy Johnson to implement a dress code for road games for the 1988 season.
Speaking to the Associated Press about two weeks after the game in January 1987 Johnson said:
"“It’s something that I’ve given a lot of thought to primarily because we had an 11-1 football team, we went through an undefeated regular season and yet it was one of the most trying and frustrating years of my coaching background,”"
Then Miami Athletic Director Sam Jankovic and school President Tad Foote were also upset when the team walked out of a dinner with Penn State.
The Players left before performing what was supposed to be a team skit. Late Miami Defensive Tackle Jerome Brown said at the time
"“Did the Japanese sit down and eat dinner with Pearl Harbor before they bombed it?”"
