Gaby Sanchez 2011

Gaby Sanchez finished fourth in the National League Rookie of the Year balloting in 2010. He hit .273 with 19 home runs and 73 RBIs playing for the hometown Marlins. Sanchez played the 2003 and ’04 seasons at the U. He followed that up by hitting .293 with 13 home runs and 50 RBIs in 2011.

Sanchez earned his sole All-Star game appearance that season. The Marlins first baseman popped out in the only All-Star at-bat of his career. Sanchez was traded during the 2012 season to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He stayed with the Pirates through the 2014 season. Sanchez played the 2015 season in Japan.

He tried making the Seattle Mariners in 2016 but was released in Spring training.

Yasmani Grandal 2015

Yasmani Grandal played with the Hurricanes from the 2008-10 seasons. His .401 career batting average is second only to Pat Burrell’s .442. He is also ninth in school history with a .615 career slugging percentage. Grandal was an All-American Catcher in 2010.

He was the 12 pick overall in the first round of the 2012 MLB draft by the Reds. Grandal and another former Hurricane, Yonder Alonso were traded by the Reds in 2011 offseason to the Padres. Pitcher Edinson Volquez also went west in a trade that the Reds acquired starting Pitcher Mat Latos.
