Miami Basketball Alums Shining in NBA Summer League
Miami Basketball alums have made an impact on their teams in the NBA Las Vegas Summer League. They should all have a chance to earn a roster spot in October.
Trey McKinney-Jones, Sheldon Mac, Kamari Murphy and Davon Reed have all represented Miami Basketball well in the NBA Summer League. MCK-J, Reed and Mac have received a lot more playing time than Murphy.
McKinney-Jones is trying to make the Heat roster after spending the last three seasons with Fort Wayne in the NBA Developmental League. He has started at forward and guard for the Heat in Las Vegas.
McKinney-Jones versatility will help his attempt to make the Heat’s roster in training camp and the preseason. He has played well throughout NBA Summer League.
McKinney-Jones scored seven points, had six rebounds and three assists in the Heat’s 78-73 loss to Dallas on Tuesday. He was three of eight from the floor and had one turnover.

McKinney-Jones matched up with Mac’s Washington Wizards in the first round NBA Summer League playoffs on Wednesday. The Heat defeated the Wizards 89-88 to advance to the Sweet 16 in Las Vegas.
McK-J contributed eight points on four of nine shooting with three rebounds and one assist. One night after starting at guard be moved back to forward for the game against the Wizards.
McK-J had started at forward throughout most of the Summer League. The Heat next plays the L.A. Clippers in the summer league playoffs.
Sheldon Mac has been a steady player throughout the summer league for the Wizards. He made the Washington roster as an undrafted player last season.
Mac scored 13 points on three of five shooting, made both of his three-point attempts and made five of his six free-throws. He also had three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. He also had one turnover.
The Wizards finished the NBA Summer League 0-5. Mac has been a bright spot. In their last game, before the “playoffs” began, the Wizards lost 82-73 to the Bulls summer league team.
Mac has one of his better games in Las Vegas in the loss. The star of the Miami 2016 Sweet 16 team scored 20 points. He shot eight of 11 from the floor, made all four of his free throws and had two rebounds an assist and two steals. Mac also had two turnovers.
Davon Reed being selected 32nd overall in last month’s NBA’s draft surprised many. He had been an impact player for the Suns in the summer league. The Suns won their first round playoff game on Wednesday against Utah.
Reed played 26 minutes off the bench as Phoenix won 97-81. He scored 15 points on five of nine from the floor, two of five from three-point range and had five rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. He also had one foul.

The 2-2 Suns will play the 3-0 Grizzlies tonight in the Sweet 16. Murphy and the 2-1 Nets will play the 1-3 Denver Nuggets in the Sweet 16 late this afternoon.
