Miami Hurricanes Michael Badgley on Groza Watch List
Miami Hurricanes kicker Michael Badgley was one of the best in the country last season. He has been rewarded for his past success by being named to the Lou Groza Award watch list honoring the nation’s best kicker.
Badgley led the Miami Hurricanes in scoring with 116 points and ACC kickers with 8.9 points per game in 2016. He also finished 25th in the nation in scoring last season. Badgley was named first-team preseason All-ACC earlier this summer.
Badgley made 53 of 55 points after touchdowns and 21 of 26 field goals in 2016. His 80.8 field goal percentage ranked fourth in the ACC and 31st in the country. His field goal percentage was slightly down from 83.3 percent in 2015. Badgley made all 40 of his PATs during the 2015 season.
Badgley’s 25 made field goals in 2015 set the school single season record. He should shatter Carlos Huerta’s school career record of 73. He needs just 13 more to tie Huerta.
Badgley is a near lock to also set the school career scoring record. He is 30 points behind all-time leader Jon Peattie who had 337 from 2002 to 2006.
Badgley was also impressive on kickoffs. He averaged 63.5 yards per kickoff.
The Groza Award is given out locally by the Palm Beach Sports Commission. Twenty semifinalists for the Groza will be announced on November 2. A list of 100 Football Bowl Subdivision Head Coaches, Sports Information Directors, Media, former Groza Award winners and some current NFL Kickers make up the panel of voters.
