It has been four years since a Miami Hurricanes player was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Warren Sapp was inducted in 2013.
Sapp became the sixth Miami Hurricanes alum inducted in 2013. He was also the program’s third defensive lineman and second defensive tackle enshrined in Canton. He was preceded in the Hall of Fame by other Hurricanes Defensive linemen Ted Hendricks and Cortez Kennedy.
Other Miami Hurricanes that have been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame are quarterback Jim Kelly, wide receiver Michael Irvin and center Jim Otto.
The next few years should also see some more Miami Hurricanes alums inducted. Ray Lewis will be eligible in 2018, Ed Reed in 2019 and Reggie Wayne in 2020. Other Hurricanes who should be headed for the Hall of Fame include running back Edgerrin James, wide receiver Andre Johnson, and former Head Coach Jimmy Johnson.
In the next ten years, it’s not inconceivable that Miami could double its total in Canton. Should that happen it could vault the Hurricanes to second all-time depending how many players other schools have inducted.
Notre Dame currently leads played enshrined in Canton with 13 players. USC is second with 12 and Ohio State third with 10. The Hurricanes are only two players out of fourth all-time.
Several Power Conference major schools are among schools with eight players. There will be a lot of shuffling over the next five classes of enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
