Warren Sapp

With Michael Irvin perhaps no one epitomized the swagger of the U as much as Warren Sapp. He came at the end of the great Miami teams of the 1980’s and early 1990s.

Sapp joined the Miami Hurricanes for the 1992 season. He was one of the most decorated Defensive Tackles in Miami history.

Sapp was dominant as a Junior and Senior. He earned a multitude of Awards.

  • Second-team All-American (1993)
  • 2× First-team All-Big East (1993–1994)
  • Consensus first-team All-American (1994)
  • Lombardi Award (1994)
  • Bronko Nagurski Trophy (1994)
  • Bill Willis Award (1994)
  • Outland Trophy finalist (1994)
  • Big East Defensive Player of the Year (1994)
  • Defensive Player of the Year by Football Writers Association of America

Sapp was compared to the greats that came before him at Miami by former Hurricanes teammate Mark Ceaser. He said:

"“Warren has the power of a Cortez Kennedy and the quickness of a Russell Maryland”"

Sapp was amazingly the first player to ever earn the Lombard Award from Miami. Like Hendricks did nearly 30 years before him, Sapp also finished in the top ten voting for the Heisman Trophy in 1994. It was a rarity for a Defensive Player.
